Course Description:

This training will describe specific clinical challenges for clinicians and care providers who manage patients with SMI. It will emphasize challenges that cut across diagnostic categories such as securing resources to address cognitive difficulties, for example ,or securing optimal medical care.  The training will put these difficulties in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, including how the crisis is affecting the workforce and the critical need for workforce protection.

While this course was taped during the pandemic, the content is relevant  to any time and reflects current medical research and practices.

In addition, the course will put the efforts of individual clinicians and mental health providers into the larger context of an overstretched mental healthcare system that the current public health crisis has uncovered, particularly vis-à-vis the range of psychiatric and medical resources needed to optimally help the SMI population.

Course Objectives Include:

1) Psychosis – What it is and also what it is not.

2) Identifying psychiatric and medical conditions that can cause psychosis.

3) Clinical vignettes as examples about how psychosis can present with various conditions.

4) Practical strategies around how to best help somebody who is experiencing psychosis.

3) Understanding the strategies to involve parents in youth substance use treatment
