Behind the Scenes of Dementia Care:
The Real Work of Dementia Caregiving Across Care Networks

 Nicole Werner, PhD

2 CE Credits offered: NASW / LICSW / LDAC / LMHC / Nursing

This presentation seeks to expose the invisible yet highly coordinated care delivery work that family and friend caregivers perform across networks to provide care to people living with dementia—work that is best understood as a sociotechnical system with dynamic goals, shifting demands, and interdependent roles.
Dr. Werner will describe how this work reaches beyond hands‑on tasks to include continuous information management, coordination, and environment/workflow redesign, as caregivers navigate behavioral and psychological symptoms, assess credibility and utility of information, and deploy real‑world strategies to overcome work‑system constraints. The presentation will map the caregiving work system, illustrate common constraints and the practical strategies caregivers already use, and translate these insights into concrete design implications that recognize caregivers as essential partners in care delivery for people living with dementia.
